Extension at Kill/ Full Architectural Service Studio

This project transformed a dated 1970s two-storey house into a contemporary, highly energy-efficient home. The existing structure lacked architectural significance, so RSDS Architects introduced a striking new aesthetic through a front and side extension, clad in a refined combination of brick and zinc. The zinc detailing adds a crisp, modern edge, while the brickwork ensures continuity with the original house.

A timber-clad first-floor extension, set back from the front, softens the massing and introduces warmth to the composition. The previously awkward window placements were redesigned for better proportion and balance.

Completed in January 2019

At the rear, a zinc-clad mono-pitch roof defines the extension, creating a dramatic interior volume while allowing natural light to flood the open-plan kitchen, living, and dining (KLD) space. This area seamlessly connects to a covered patio, providing year-round outdoor living.

A key focus of the project was energy efficiency, with extensive insulation upgrades elevating the home from a D rating to an A1 rating.

Through a thoughtful balance of modern materials, spatial improvements, and sustainable design, RSDS Architects have turned this once unremarkable house into a striking, light-filled family home perfectly suited for contemporary living.
