McDonnells Public House/ Full Architectural Service Studio

McDonnell’s Bar, a well-known landmark in Newbridge, underwent a transformative renovation and expansion, enhancing both its social atmosphere and architectural presence. The project included a 50% increase in floorspace, achieved through a striking rear extension featuring a dramatic double-pitched glazed roof. This newly enclosed courtyard floods the space with natural light while providing shelter, allowing for year-round use.

A new two-storey timber-clad structure was added to the rear, housing storage and back-of-house facilities. Its warm, organic materiality contrasts beautifully with the sleek glass roof, maintaining a balance between tradition and contemporary design.

Inside, the entire venue was reimagined with bespoke finishes that elevate its historic charm. The handcrafted bar, rich timber detailing, and carefully curated lighting create an intimate yet dynamic setting. The layout was optimized for better circulation, enhancing the patron experience.

The interiors maintain a classical elegance.

While the traditional Irish pub façade was carefully preserved, the contemporary rear extension redefines the venue’s social spaces, blending old and new seamlessly. This thoughtful renovation has cemented McDonnell’s Bar as one of Leinster’s most sought-after destinations, offering a unique, high-end hospitality experience.
